Via Novocom CEO and creative director John Ridgway unlocks the secrets of good design. Ridgway, the recipient of 14 Emmys for his broadcast design work, has provided design and strategy for clients including CNBC, MSNBC, NBC, Discovery, RTL, News Corp, Fuji TV, Hong Kong Cable and others.

Ridgway talks about how design can not only change a broadcaster’s fortunes but sometimes an entire nation’s. In the 1990s, he co-created Russia’s first TV election campaign for Boris Yeltsin, who dissolved the Soviet Union, and has consulted on the US State Department’s global branding.

I am very proud that I was able to donate my time and my art for the Hope For Haiti Now telethon. I hope that my Haiti-inspired drawings helped to inspire some to donate to the cause. My chalk drawings were featured in screens behind Wyclef Jean and other Haitian musicians at the close of the show. Please enjoy the song again and donate!

I recently found one of the first animations that I designed. Working with the studio Novocom and animator David Daniels of Peter Gabriel’s “Big Time” fame I designed and storyboarded this late ’80’s animation for the 35th anniversary of Disneyland.

We shot a room sized model with computerized motion control cameras and used film opticals for the effect. It took weeks to complete. We could probably do it in better in two days now.
